Deathsquad Demongods... where to start? I asked singer Stevie Peavey for a description of his new band. "Write this down - Deathsquad Demongods have a sound not unlike Godzilla stomping through your town. We rock with the intensity of a thousand suns! Uhh... hey, can you finish this yourself? I've gotta try to get my van out of the impound lot." With that, Stevie walked out.
While that is indeed a strong statement, Deathsquad Demongods are one band that aren't afraid to have fun in a world of homogenized rock n' roll, often with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Whether waxing autobiographically about Stevie's own riches-to-rags story on the track "Everybody's Favorite Guy", or screaming out the deliciously egotistical title track; "Deathsquad Demongods", these are tracks that will bring a smile to your face amid the crushing rock power.
So how to categorize the band? Well, I'd say their closest musical counterpart would be Turbonegro, who share similar styles of humor amid soaring stadium-style rock. AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Murderdolls, and Stevie's previous band, Van Stone, are obvious influences. Asking Stevie how he would categorize it brings another rant. "Well, we're Demoncore. It aint like Metalcore or Hardcore. Demoncore is actually named after a supercritical chunk of plutonium in Los Alamos, New Mexico. It's like us. Badass, evil, heavy, and tough to deal with. However, we haven't killed anyone. Yet."
It's clear Stevie's using this time to amuse me (and himself) more than anything, but amusement seems to be fused to the soul of Deathsquad Demongods. Don't, however, let their humor, the elaborate Road Warrior costumes they often wear, the smoke and the pyro distract from the well crafted nuggets of hard rock that are their trademark. We're talking about songs that are also catchy, hooky, and instantly memorable. Whether the song is about leading the armies of hell, or Stevie's last bitchy girlfriend, each one's designed to be a singalong from first listen.
Join them, won't you? Deathsquad Demongods… your new favorite fuckin' band.
